The short version

Lagos is a small Algarve town with famous cliffs and coves, a big English-speaking community and over 3,000 hours of sun a year. It is busy in summer, quiet in winter and you will want a car for anything beyond the town.

Why live here

  • Some of Europe's most beautiful beaches and cliffs
  • Daily life works in English
  • Sunny, mild winters
  • Lively surf, sailing and hiking scene
  • Faro airport about an hour away

Why not

  • Many rentals switch to holiday lets in summer
  • Very quiet off-season
  • Limited public transport
  • Small-town healthcare; hospitals are in Portimao and Faro

Living in Lagos means some of Europe's most beautiful cliffs and beaches, over 3,000 hours of sun a year and a small Algarve town where English is spoken almost everywhere. By our estimate, a comfortable single budget is about €1,650 a month, a couple needs around €2,450 and a family of four about €3,500 before school fees. A one-bed in the center runs about €800 a month in our estimate.

It suits retirees, surfers, remote workers and English speakers who want sea and sun. The trade-offs are summer holiday lets squeezing the rental market, quiet winters and the need for a car.

Getting around

The old town and marina are walkable. Buses and a regional train link Lagos to Portimao and Faro, but services are infrequent. Most residents rely on a car.

Faro airport, about an hour away, has many UK routes and seasonal North American flights. See our Faro guide for details.

Daily life and community

Daily life in Lagos follows the seasons. Summer is busy with visitors, surf schools and beach bars; winter is quiet, with walks along the cliffs, local markets and a small but close-knit community of year-round residents. English is the working language for many foreign residents, and there are clubs and groups for almost every hobby. Locals are welcoming, though learning Portuguese helps you feel part of the town rather than a guest.

Work, coworking and internet

Lagos has coworking spaces and a seasonal remote-work community, and a hot desk costs about €110 a month in our estimate. Local work is mostly tourism. Portugal is 5 hours ahead of US Eastern, giving about 3 hours of overlap.

Healthcare and schools

Portugal's national health service covers legal residents, and there is a health center in Lagos with the main hospitals in Portimao and Faro. Private clinics serve the many foreign residents. There are international schools in the western Algarve.

The downsides

  • Seasonal rentals. Holiday lets shrink the long-term market in summer.
  • Quiet winters. Many restaurants and bars close or shorten hours.
  • Car dependence. Infrequent buses and trains.
  • Healthcare distance. Hospitals are in Portimao and Faro.

How Lagos compares

Compare Lagos vs Faro for the Algarve's main city and airport, or Lagos vs Cascais for a beach town on Lisbon's doorstep. Malaga is the Spanish option with a big city attached.
