Been to Funchal? Add it to your Europe passport.
The short version
Funchal has one of the mildest climates in Europe, a safe small-city feel and a well-known remote-work scene on Madeira. It is steep, island-bound and pricier than most of mainland Portugal outside Lisbon.
Why live here
- Spring weather all year: January highs around 20 degrees C
- Very safe, friendly and easy in English
- Hiking along the levadas and dramatic coast
- An established digital-nomad community
- Seasonal nonstop to Newark
Why not
- Steep hills everywhere; a car helps
- Rents have risen fast with tourism and nomads
- Few sandy beaches; mostly rocks and sea pools
- Limited flights in winter and occasional wind delays at the airport
Living in Funchal, Madeira's capital, means spring weather all year, a very safe small city, levada walks into the laurel forest and one of Europe's best-known communities of remote workers. By our estimate, a comfortable single budget is about €1,850 a month, a couple needs around €2,750 and a family of four about €3,900 before school fees. A one-bed in the center runs about €1,050 a month in our estimate.
It suits remote workers, retirees and English speakers who want mild weather and nature. The trade-offs are steep streets, few sandy beaches, rising rents and limited flights in winter.

Budgets add rent, utilities, internet, transit, groceries, 12 inexpensive restaurant meals a month, health insurance of about EUR 60 for a single adult, a gym membership and EUR 350 for leisure, clothes and travel; couple and family budgets use the same proportions as our other cities in the country. They are rounded and are not quotes. Rent: Doutor Financas housing observatory, September 2026: Funchal EUR 16.00/m2 (asking); INE new leases Q1 2026: EUR 13.65/m2, times 50 m2, times 1.29 (our existing-city calibration for that source).

Getting around
The center is walkable along the seafront, but most of Funchal climbs steeply up the hills, so expect buses, taxis or a car. City buses are frequent, and a cable car runs up to Monte.
Madeira airport is about 20 minutes from the city and has many UK routes and a seasonal Newark nonstop. Strong winds sometimes delay landings, so leave slack in tight connections.
Daily life and community
Daily life in Funchal is relaxed and outdoors. Many people start the day with a swim at the Lido or a sea pool, hike the levadas on weekends and meet other newcomers through coworking spaces and community groups. The city is small, so the social scene is friendly but not big. English is widely spoken, and locals are used to visitors. Expect quieter nights than Lisbon, with most life around the old town's restaurants. New Year's Eve fireworks over the bay are the highlight of the year.
Work, coworking and internet
Madeira has a well-organized remote-work community, with coworking spaces in Funchal and the nomad village in Ponta do Sol, and a hot desk costs about €140 a month in our estimate. Portugal is 5 hours ahead of US Eastern, giving about 3 hours of overlap, and Madeira keeps the same time as Lisbon.
Healthcare and schools
Madeira's regional health service covers legal residents, and Funchal has the island's main hospital and private clinics. Some specialist care means a trip to Lisbon. There is an international school and several private schools; check places early.
The downsides
- Hills. Very steep streets; a car or taxis help.
- Rents. Prices rose fast with tourism and remote workers.
- Beaches. Mostly rocks and sea pools rather than sand.
- Flights. Wind delays and fewer winter routes.
