The short version
Braga is one of Portugal's youngest and most affordable cities, an hour from Porto, with a pretty historic center and a strong family feel. It is rainy in winter and inland, so it suits people who want value and calm over beaches.

- Among the lowest rents in our Portuguese set
- Safe, young and family-friendly
- Porto and its airport within about an hour
- Green countryside and the Geres national park nearby
Why not
- Rainy winters, with about 1,450 mm of rain a year
- Small international community
- Inland: the nearest beaches are a drive away
- Fewer jobs in English than Lisbon or Porto

Getting around
The historic center is pedestrian and easy to walk, and city buses cover the rest. Trains and buses reach Porto in about an hour, and Porto airport is about 40 to 50 minutes by car or airport bus.
Porto airport has nonstops to Newark and Toronto and many UK routes. See our Porto guide for details.
Daily life and community
Daily life in Braga is local and easygoing. The center fills with students and families at weekends, cafes are cheap and the city has a busy calendar of religious festivals, with Holy Week and the Sao Joao celebrations in June the biggest. Foreign residents are still few, but English is common among younger people. Weekends reach the Peneda-Geres national park, Guimaraes, the Minho wine country and the beaches north of Porto.
Work, coworking and internet
Braga has a university and a growing tech sector, and a hot desk costs about €90 a month in our estimate. Local salaries are lower than in Lisbon. Portugal is 5 hours ahead of US Eastern, giving about 3 hours of overlap.
Healthcare and schools
Portugal's national health service covers legal residents, and Braga has a large public hospital and private clinics. There are a few international and private schools in the city and many more around Porto.
The downsides
- Rain. About 1,449 mm a year and grey winters.
- Inland. The nearest beaches are a drive away.
- Small expat scene. Fewer English speakers and international events than Porto or Lisbon.
- Jobs in English. Limited outside tech and the university.
