The short version

Santa Cruz is Tenerife's capital: a working Spanish city with 20-degree winters, low rents for a coastal place and the island's trams and buses. Most foreign residents live on the sunnier south coast, so decide early whether you want city life or resort life.

Why live here

  • Spring-like weather all year, with January highs around 21 degrees C
  • Cheaper than mainland coastal hotspots
  • Mountains, volcano and beaches on one island
  • Canary Islands tax rules (lower VAT-style IGIC) on everyday purchases

Why not

  • No direct flights to the US
  • Island distances and traffic between north and south
  • The north of the island is cloudier than the south
  • Fewer English speakers in the capital than in the resorts

Living in Santa Cruz de Tenerife gives you spring weather all year, a real Spanish capital rather than a resort, low rents for a coastal city and Mount Teide above it all. By our estimate, a comfortable single budget is about €1,500 a month, a couple needs around €2,200 and a family of four about €3,200 before school fees. A one-bed in the center runs about €550 a month in our estimate.

It suits sun-seekers, remote workers and retirees who want mild weather and lower costs. The trade-offs are no direct flights to the US, island distances and fewer English speakers in the capital than in the southern resorts.

Our estimate for a comfortable mid-range lifestyle renting a 1-bed (single), 2-bed (couple) or 3-bed (family of 4, excluding school fees) outside the very center. Budgets add rent, utilities, internet, transit, groceries, 12 inexpensive restaurant meals a month, health insurance of about EUR 60 for a single adult, a gym membership and EUR 350 for leisure, clothes and travel; couple and family budgets use the same proportions as our other cities in the country. They are rounded and are not quotes. Rent: RealAdvisor Santa Cruz de Tenerife, EUR 157/m2 a year for flats (October 2026), times 50 m2, times 0.85 (our existing-city calibration for that source).

Getting around

Santa Cruz is walkable along the seafront and through the center, and a tram links it to La Laguna, the university town next door. Buses cover the whole island. To explore the island or live outside the city, a car is useful.

Tenerife North airport is close to the city, while Tenerife South handles most international flights, including many UK routes and Air Canada to Montreal and seasonally Toronto. There are no US nonstops.

Daily life and community

Daily life in Santa Cruz is that of a Spanish city rather than a resort. People shop on the pedestrian streets, swim at Las Teresitas on weekends and take the tram up to La Laguna for its university bars. Carnival in February is one of the biggest in the world. Spanish is the norm in the capital, while English is more common in the southern resorts. Weekends can mean hiking in the Anaga mountains, a trip up Mount Teide or a ferry to La Gomera.

Work, coworking and internet

Tenerife has a well-known remote-work scene, mainly in the south, and a hot desk costs about €90 a month in our estimate. The Canary Islands are on the same time as the UK, an hour behind mainland Spain, which gives about one more hour of overlap with US Eastern.

Healthcare and schools

Spain's public system covers legal residents who pay into social security, and Santa Cruz has a large university hospital. Private clinics exist across the island, and many visas need private insurance. There are British and international schools, mostly in the south and around La Laguna.

The downsides

  • Flights. No direct US flights, and long flights to the mainland.
  • Island distances. Traffic on the main roads between north and south.
  • Weather differences. The north and the capital are cloudier than the sunny south.
  • Wages. Low local salaries and a tourism-led economy.

How Santa Cruz de Tenerife compares

Compare Santa Cruz de Tenerife vs Funchal for the other great Atlantic island option, or Santa Cruz de Tenerife vs Malaga for the mainland's sunniest big city. Valletta is another sunny, English-friendly island capital.
