Living in San Sebastian: What It's Really Like

Been to San Sebastian? Add it to your Europe passport.
The short version
San Sebastian is a small, safe and very beautiful seaside city, famous for its food and three city beaches. It is also one of the most expensive places to rent in our Spanish set, and it rains a lot.
Why live here
- One of Europe's great food cities
- Three city beaches and green hills to hike
- Very safe and easy to walk or cycle
- Strong schools and family life
- France is 20 minutes away
Why not
- High rents and very few long-term rentals
- Rainy, mild climate with fewer sunny days than southern Spain
- Basque and Spanish both matter in daily life
- No long-haul flights from the local airport
Living in San Sebastian means three city beaches, green hills, one of the best food scenes in Europe and a compact, very safe Basque city where you can walk or cycle almost everywhere. By our estimate, a comfortable single budget is about €1,850 a month, a couple needs around €2,700 and a family of four about €4,000 before school fees. A one-bed in the center runs about €1,050 a month in our estimate.
It suits families, food lovers and professionals who value quality of life over sunshine. The trade-offs are high rents, very few long-term rentals and a rainy, mild climate.

Getting around
The city is small, flat near the sea and well served by local buses, the Euskotren line and a growing bike network. Most residents do not need a car day to day.
The local airport mainly has domestic flights. Bilbao airport, about 100 km away, has UK routes and a seasonal Newark flight, and Biarritz in France is about 50 km away. France itself is about 20 minutes by car or train.
Daily life and community
Daily life in San Sebastian revolves around food, the sea and walking. Pintxos bars in the old town and Gros are a social habit rather than a tourist show, private cooking societies are part of local culture, and surfers are in the water at Zurriola all year. The city is small, so you will see the same faces often. The international community is modest, and local friendships take time. Weekends reach the French Basque coast, the Rioja wine region and the mountains inland.
Work, coworking and internet
San Sebastian has a technology and research scene linked to its universities, and a hot desk costs about €160 a month in our estimate. Spanish and often Basque matter for local jobs. Spain is 6 hours ahead of US Eastern, giving about 2 hours of overlap.
Healthcare and schools
The Basque public health system is well regarded, and legal residents who pay into social security can register. Private clinics are available, and many visas need private cover. There are bilingual and international schools in and around the city, but places are limited.
The downsides
- Rent and supply. Some of the highest rents in Spain and very few long-term flats.
- Rain. About 1,747 mm a year and many grey days.
- Languages. Basque and Spanish both matter in schools and offices.
- Flights. No long-haul flights locally; use Bilbao, Biarritz or Madrid.

Is San Sebastian expensive to live in?
Yes, for Spain. By our estimate a comfortable single budget is about €1,850 a month and a central one-bed about €1,050. The bigger problem is supply: many flats are holiday rentals, so long-term homes go fast.

Do I need to speak Basque in San Sebastian?
Not for daily life: Spanish is spoken everywhere. Basque is widely used in schools and public jobs, so families and people looking for local work should expect to meet it.
