Living in Chania, Crete: What It's Really Like

Been to Chania? Add it to your Europe passport.
The short version
Chania is Crete's most beautiful town, with a Venetian harbour, mountains and some of Greece's best beaches nearby. It is relaxed and good value, but very seasonal and far from North America.
Why live here
- Long summers and mild winters
- Beaches and the White Mountains within an hour
- Safe, friendly and easy in English
- Cheaper than Athens for many daily costs
Why not
- Very seasonal: many places close in winter
- No direct flights to North America and few UK flights in winter
- You need a car to enjoy the island
- Summer rentals squeeze the long-term market
Living in Chania means a Venetian harbour, the White Mountains behind you and some of Greece's best beaches within an hour, in a safe, friendly town that slows down in winter. By our estimate, a comfortable single budget is about €1,600 a month, a couple needs around €2,500 and a family of four about €3,500 before school fees. A one-bed in the center runs about €700 a month in our estimate.
It suits retirees, sun-seekers and remote workers who want sea and mountains at a moderate cost. The trade-offs are strong seasonality, few winter flights and the need for a car.

Getting around
The old town is walkable and city buses connect the suburbs, but to reach beaches, villages and the mountains you will want a car. Intercity buses run along the north coast to Rethymno and Heraklion.
Chania airport has seasonal UK flights, including London, Manchester and Birmingham, and flights to Athens all year. There are no North American nonstops.
Daily life and community
Daily life in Chania is outdoors for most of the year. Swimming season runs from May to October, tavernas are the center of social life, and weekends mean gorges, mountain villages and beaches like Falassarna and Balos. The foreign community is a mix of retirees, remote workers and families, with many British and Scandinavian residents in the villages around town. Cretans are hospitable, and some Greek goes a long way, especially in winter when fewer tourists are around.
Work, coworking and internet
Chania has a few coworking spaces and a growing remote-work crowd, and a hot desk costs about €120 a month in our estimate. Local work is mostly tourism and agriculture. Greece is 7 hours ahead of US Eastern, giving about 1 hour of overlap, which is tight for US-based jobs.
Healthcare and schools
Greece's public health system covers legal residents who pay contributions, and Chania has a general hospital. Many foreign residents use private clinics and insurance. International school options on Crete are limited.
The downsides
- Seasonality. Many businesses close in winter.
- Flights. Few winter routes and nothing to North America.
- Car needed. Buses do not reach much of the island.
- Rental squeeze. Holiday lets cut long-term supply.
