Quick verdict

Chania is the cheaper of the two: our estimate for a single person is about €50 a month less than Thessaloniki, mostly because of rent. Chania has the milder winter (about 15°C vs 12°C average highs in Dec to Feb). Daily life

Chania is a mid-size city on the coast; Thessaloniki is a large city on the coast. Chania is Crete's most beautiful town, with a Venetian harbour, mountains and some of Greece's best beaches nearby. It is relaxed and good value, but very seasonal and far from North America. Thessaloniki is a student-heavy, food-obsessed second city with a waterfront, lower rents than Athens and fewer foreigners, which makes it feel more Greek. A single person can live well on about €1,650 a month in our estimate. Flights to North America go through Athens or another hub.

Living in Chania: the upsides and downsides

  • Long summers and mild winters
  • Beaches and the White Mountains within an hour
  • Safe, friendly and easy in English
  • Downside: Very seasonal: many places close in winter
  • Downside: No direct flights to North America and few UK flights in winter

Living in Thessaloniki: the upsides and downsides

  • Lowest budget in this batch for a single person (about €1,650 a month, our estimate)
  • A big university population keeps cafes, music and nightlife busy year-round
  • Walkable center and seafront promenade
  • Downside: No direct flights to the US or Canada found
  • Downside: Colder winters than Athens: January highs near 10.6 degrees C and lows about 3.4

Visas and residency

Both cities are in Greece, so you’d use the same residence routes either way:
