Daily life

Marbella is a mid-size city on the coast; Valencia is a large city on the coast. Marbella is the Costa del Sol's best-known address: sunny, safe, English-friendly and full of international schools. Rents are near the top of our Spanish set, and daily life usually needs a car. Valencia is big enough for culture, a metro and a city beach, yet flat, bikeable and cheaper than Madrid or Barcelona. It is a favorite for families and remote workers, with good weather year-round and a modest flight network to North America.

Living in Marbella: the upsides and downsides

  • Mild winters and long beach season
  • Daily life works in English
  • International schools and a big expat community
  • Downside: Rents near the top of our Spanish set
  • Downside: Spread-out urbanisations mean you need a car

Living in Valencia: the upsides and downsides

  • Flat, bikeable city with a huge river-bed park
  • Beach and old town in the same transit network
  • Rents lower than Madrid and Barcelona (about EUR 16 per square meter in September 2026)
  • Downside: Direct US flights are limited and seasonal
  • Downside: Humid, hot summers

Visas and residency

Both cities are in Spain, so you’d use the same residence routes either way:
