Getting around
Public transport in Luxembourg has been free since 29 February 2020, so your transit cost is zero. A tram runs from the station through the center to Kirchberg and the airport, and buses and trains cover the rest of the country. You can live without a car in the city.
Luxembourg airport has flights to London, Manchester and Edinburgh, and United plans a Newark route from April 2027, according to the airport's Wikipedia table. Paris, Brussels and Frankfurt are a few hours by train.
Daily life and community
Daily life in Luxembourg City is calm, orderly and very international: most residents were born abroad. Social life often runs through work, sports clubs and international associations, and the city empties a little at weekends as cross-border workers go home. Parks, river valleys and forests are close, and the countryside of the Mullerthal and the Moselle wine villages are a short ride away. You will hear Luxembourgish, French, German, Portuguese and English in a single day.
Work, coworking and internet
Luxembourg's economy runs on finance, funds, the EU institutions and a growing tech sector, and salaries are among the highest in Europe. A hot desk costs about €240 a month in our estimate. Luxembourg is 6 hours ahead of US Eastern, giving about 2 hours of overlap.
Healthcare and schools
Health insurance through the national health fund (CNS) is compulsory and comes out of your salary, and most costs are reimbursed. Quality is high, and some residents use care across the border. Luxembourg has European and international schools.
The downsides
- Housing. Among the highest rents in our data.
- Weather. Grey winters with little sunshine.
- Quiet. A small city with a modest nightlife.
- Languages. Luxembourgish, French and German; French matters for daily admin.
